Monday’s meeting of the Billings City Council left members pondering the prospects of potbellied pigs as pets.  Several council members echoed the opinion that livestock shouldn’t be pets.  Residents are currently not permitted to own potbellied pigs.

It was decided at a prior meeting that Billings Animal Control would not enforce the ordinance that, in effect, bans pigs as pets within the city limits until a decision is made by the council.  KTVQ.com reports that the change in the ordinance would allow one potbellied pig per household not to exceed 125 pounds.  They would be required to be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, must wear a license, harness and leash in public.

Councilmember Ryan Sullivan opposed the ordinance, but suggested an amended application for residents to apply for ‘specialty’ pets.  The council will discuss the issue further at the June 19 meeting.
