BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — Federal and state officials plan a public briefing this week on airborne contaminants from a state Superfund site in central Billings.

The Billings Gazette reports that Thursday’s meeting at Lewis and Clarke Middle School will address vapors emanating from old dry cleaning solvents that contaminated the area’s soil. The vapors can become trapped in buildings, posing a health threat.

The 855-acre area was declared a state Superfund site in 1992.

Officials from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Montana Department of Environmental Quality will discuss options for eliminating ground pollutants and vapors at Thursday’s briefing.

The EPA recently collected air samples at 49 homes and business and will share test results with building owners.
