The Billings Gazette reports that Gov. Steve Bullock will never deploy Montana National Guard troops [quote] “based simply on the whim of the President’s morning Twitter habit.” [end quote] The Democratic governor and possible contender for his party’s presidential nomination in 2020, said in a statement Thursday that the responsibility of sending U.S. National Guardsman anywhere is one of the most difficult decisions he faces.

President Donald Trump signed a memorandum Wednesday that would allow the use of National Guard troops to help fight illegal immigration and drug trafficking on the U.S.-Mexico border. Officials of the Bullock administration say the request for troops would have to come directly from the governor of a border state, and Montana has yet to receive any such request.

On Tuesday, Trump publicly equated the need for Guardsman with his proposed border wall.
