In yet another instance of yet another fraudulent phone scam, the Deer Lodge police department has reported complaints of a telephone solicitor calling Montana residents and claiming he is raising money for Broadwater County Deputy Mason Moore, who was killed in the line of duty on Tuesday, May 16th.  KTVQ.com reports that the male caller, who has an accent, says he is from the Montana Law Enforcement Academy and is accepting credit card donations.

The MLEA is not soliciting donations for Deputy Moore.  One way of avoiding fraudulent inquiries like this, specifically from a phone solicitor seeking credit card information, is to request documentation be sent to verify their identity.  The Montana Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association is accepting donations for Deputy Moore’s family, but they are not soliciting donations by phone.  Don’t give credit card information to unsolicited callers.
