The Hill is projecting incumbent Montana Republican Congressman Greg Gianforte the winner in his reelection bid as the state’s lone representative in the U.S. House, defeating former Bozeman Democratic state Representative Kathleen Williams. Gianforte was favored in polls heading into Election Day, bolstered by support from President Donald Trump during multiple campaign trips to Big Sky Country– including Trump’s controversial praise of Gianforte last month at a Missoula rally for assaulting journalist Ben Jacobs of the Guardian at his campaign office on the eve of his May 2017 special election victory. Trump said “We endorsed Greg really early, but I heard that he had body slammed a reporter,” later adding “Any gut who can do a body slam is my kind of guy…” Gianforte won pleaded guilty to the assault charge.
