Big Game General Rifle Season and what you need to do when hunting in Southwest Montana

We are only a few days away from a day that hunters from all across Montana and even all across the entire region have had circled on their calendars since early last December.  The Treasure State's general big game rifle season opens on Saturday, October 21 and we had the chance to talk with local forester and avid outdoor enthusiast Jocelyn Dodge about what steps you need to take when venturing into the Montana backcountry.  She says that as the days get cooler, using a little common sense will go a long way when it comes to venturing out in the cooler weather.  "With changing weather conditions it's not too early to make sure you're prepared for the unexpected as we near the general big game rifle hunting season," Dodge told us.  "Make sure you have emergency supplies with you when on roads and trails that include first aid, communications and a map."

With the change of seasons will come road closures and Dodge says that being aware is key.  "Many roads and trails will close October 15th through December 2nd through the hunting season. Plan your trip knowing where closures may occur and make sure you follow food storage requirements when setting up hunting camps," she added.  In need of proper storage devices?   Dodge tells us that they are easy and inexpensive to come by.  "Food storage containers are available for checkout at Ranger District offices for hiking, horse packing and camping," Dodge said.   For more information about recreation opportunities on the Beaverhead/Deer Lodge National Forest, please contact the Butte Ranger District at (406) 494-2147.
