In an article from USA Today a few days ago, Wyoming lawmakers are aiming to ban sales of new electric cars in the state.

Fossil Fuels Are The Best Fuels Because... Workers!

According to a group of Wyoming lawmakers, electric vehicles hinder the state's ability to trade with other states. I'm not clear on how that works, but I'm not a career politician.

These elected officials went on to claim the following reasons as to why the sales ban makes sense:

  • Batteries used in electric vehicles could contain critical minerals whose "domestic supply is limited and at risk for disruption."
  • Minerals used in electric batteries are not easily recyclable or disposable, meaning that municipal landfills in the state could be required to develop practices to dispose of these minerals in a safe and responsible manner.

The bill also notes the oil industry has employed thousands of people in the state:

“The proliferation of electric vehicles at the expense of gas-powered vehicles will have deleterious impacts on Wyoming’s communities and will be detrimental to Wyoming’s economy and the ability for the country to efficiently engage in commerce.”

The bill reads:

Wyoming's vast stretches of highway, coupled with a lack of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, make the widespread use of electric vehicles impracticable for the state.

A Flurry of Excuses

Looking at this, it seems to me the elected officials of Wyoming just want to limit your choices as a consumer, and essentially create an island separated from the rest of the progressing world.

The excuse of electric charging infrastructure is a unique one... as according to Tesla, the state offers plenty of Electric Charging:

  • Sheridan: Tesla Superchargers, and Tesla Chargers at the Hampton Inn Sheridan
  • Gillette: Superchargers
  • Teton Village: Tesla Chargers
  • Jackson: Tesla Supercharger and 4 other Tesla Charger locations
  • Wilson: Tesla Connector
  • Riverton: Tesla Connector
  • Casper: Tesla Supercharger and Tesla Chargers
  • Pinedale: Tesla Chargers
  • Rawlins: Tesla Superchargers
  • Rock Springs: Tesla Superchargers and Tesla Chargers
  • Evanston: Tesla Superchargers
  • Laramie: Tesla Superchargers
  • Cheyenne: Tesla Superchargers
  • Douglas: 3 Tesla Chargers
  • Lusk: Tesla Superchargers

Ok, so the state has Tesla owners covered traveling through. But what about other electric cars? Not as many options, yet, but far more than you likely realize. Electrify America, the main alternative for charging, shows chargers in Gillette, Casper, Rawlins, and Evanston.

I think Wyoming should reexamine its decisions, as being one of the only states banning Electric cars won't last long. It's the way we are headed, and it's about time to embrace it.

What are your thoughts on this? Is Montana likely to follow suit, with our Republican government? Or does Gov Greg Gianforte understand the importance of our Electrified Future? Let us know on App Chat or Facebook.
