Montana has several Native American reservations across the state, but some people don't know how large they are.

Montana is the fourth largest state by land mass in America. We have wide open spaces, huge ranches, and roads that go for days. One thing that many folks might not realize is how many Native American reservations are spread out throughout Montana. These reservations can be found in every corner of Montana.

A few of these reservations are some of the largest in America. Which reservations? Here are the three to know.

1. Crow Reservation

This reservation was founded in 1868 and is the largest Native American reservation in Montana. The Crow Reservation is home to the Battle of Little Bighorn, where General Custer and his 7th Calvary were defeated.

2. Fort Peck Reservation

Located in Northeast Montana, the Fort Peck Reservation is home to several tribes, including the Nakota, Lakota, Dakota, and Assiniboine. It's one of the most populated reservations in America.

3. Salish & Kootenai Reservation

More commonly known as the Flathead Reservation, this reservation covers most of the Mission Valley. Evaro to halfway up on Flathead Lake. This reservation was established in 1865, but the tribes who call it home have been there longer.

Each of these reservations has a deep history with Montana and provides insight into what Montana was like before we were a state. These reservations hold cultural events to connect with their tribes and display their lifestyle.

I grew up on the Salish & Kootenai Reservation, and it was eye-opening. Many of these tribes were forced onto these reservations during the 1800s and are a dark page in American History. I recommend everyone who hasn't been to a Native American reservation to venture out and learn about the history of their tribes.
