A Night of 90's Nostalgia in Billings

If you haven’t heard the news yet- Vanilla Ice, Ginuwine, Juvenile, All4One and Color Me Bad graced us with their presence at the Metra on April 1, 2023. Many people in Billings were skeptical this was actually a real event, as it was on April Fool’s Day. Let us tell you...it was REAL, it was LIVE, and it was EPIC!

Mix 97.1 Hosted with the Lady Outlaws

The night kicked off with me, Nikki V., and Lacey Pierce (Sullivan) opening the night on the mics with a little dance off that featured the Lady Outlaw dance team. I showed off my hilarious dance moves that were actually featured in the Gazette and that threw me for a loop! I wasn’t expecting the photo op, but it was a fun surprise to have listeners sending the photos all day Sunday.

Then Color Me Bad took the stage in nostalgic fashion and got the party started. The crowd went wild when they performed all their big hits like "I Wanna Sex You Up," and  "All 4 Love."

ALL4One was also decked out in disco sparkles as they performed" I Can Love You Like That," "I Swear," and " This group was impressive because it’s still the original 4 members 30 years later.

After a short intermission, it was Ginuwine’s turn to get us in the sexy vibe we all needed.

Dressed in all white and some dope sneakers, he serenaded women in the audience by tossing out red roses. At one point Ginuwine got on the floor of the Metra where women grabbed onto him trying to ride his pony... it as comedy from my viewpoint in the arena as I watched the fans all dance their booties off and smiles plastered on their faces.

Juvenile was next on the My 90’s Playlist docket and his wild energy hasn’t changed. His raspy voice reminded me of all his hits with Ashanti from the early 2000’s, but he brought all 90’s music like "Back That AZZ Up."

Montel Jordan was supposed to be on this tour, but unfortunately his grandmother passed away and he wasn’t able to make it to the Metra. This prompted the tour crew to set up Vanilla Ice’s set in a timely fashion.

The Man, The Myth, THE LEGEND

Vanilla Ice was the most impressive man on this tour because his opening act brought the energy we all wanted. His live drummer slayed the beat as the DJ dropped the dirtiest beats we’ve heard in a very long time. He went into a monologue saying, “90’s kids are the greatest generation because we are the last generation alive that didn’t grow up with computers. We played outside as kids, and I feel bad for kids these days...playing FortNite and S#!t.” Fans went wild!

Vanilla Ice brought out Michelangelo, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle in full costume that was totally epic! He freestyled on the mic that was sure to produce vison- the chill bumps we get on our skin when listening to music.

The biggest surprise of the night is when Vanilla Ice asked the audience to come on stage if they were dressed in 90’s attire, bucket hats, overalls, baggy pants, neon clothing... and the stage got packed! He kept the fans up there for several dance songs and I saw many familiar faces dancing their booties off.

People do not know what it’s like to set up an event like My 90's Playlist Tour.

It takes months of planning, team members who are willing to put in extra hours to get it done. This concert was in the works since January with Mix 97.1. It wouldn’t have happened without the passion for music and bringing a fun night to Billings. Our banners hung all over the Metra thanks to Josh Rath! Lacey coordinated the Lady Outlaw dance team, and Michael and I promoted the show daily on air during the Morning Mix 97.1.
