Montana Attorney General Warns Public about Charity Scams
The holidays are right around the corner, and with them come the ever present charity scams that can ruin the sentiment.
Montana Attorney General Tim Fox is warning consumers about being careful in choosing which charities to support for the holidays.
“When you donate, you want your money to go to an organization that really helps make a difference. Many reputable charities are deserving of our support,” said Attorney General Tim Fox. “Unfortunately, there are scammers out there who misuse real pictures and stories to get donations, but the money goes into their own pockets. It’s important to do your homework and give wisely. My Office of Consumer Protection stands ready to help Montanans who have questions about ways to ensure your donations will be used as intended.”
Fox said the internet can be a good place to start in making sure you give wisely.
“You can go online and search the charity name including the words ‘complaint’ or ‘scam’ to see if anything comes up,” he said. “You can also go to places like the Better Business Bureau, Wise Giving Alliance, the Charity Navigator, Charity Watch and Guidestar, and you can learn if there are any complaints.”
