GREAT FALLS, Mont. (AP) — A former Montana undersheriff has entered a no contest plea to a charge he took department firearms when he retired.

The Great Falls Tribune reports that John Glen Stevens entered the plea to a charge of felony theft Monday in Cascade County District Court in Great Falls.

Authorities say Stevens took several firearms purchased with department funds when he left the Cascade County Sheriff’s Office in January 2018.

The Montana Department of Justice opened an investigation in 2018 after receiving reports of irregularities by members of the sheriff’s office.

Captain Raymond Kenneth Hitchcock was charged with embezzlement and taking a firearm worth less than $1,500.

Hitchcock signed a deferred prosecution agreement in May.
