On their website, the non-partisan Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation (a think tank focusing on global health policy) posted a report from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta which shows that Montana has the 6th highest rate of death by firearm in the United States trailing only Alaska, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Wyoming. Wyoming, Montana and Alaska also have the highest percentage of households with guns in them.

According to the American Journal of Public Health, while there are some outliers (North and South Dakota are both in the top 10 states for gun ownership and are in the middle of the pack in regard to firearm deaths), states with the highest rates of gun ownership tend to have the highest rates of suicide and homicide from firearms.
