KALISPELL, Mont. (AP) — An adult female grizzly bear and two yearlings were struck and killed by trains earlier this month near Glacier National Park.

Montana wildlife officials said Monday a freight train struck the sow just after 4 a.m. on June 6. A passenger train hit the two yearling males later that day. The carcasses were found in the same general area about two miles east of Marias (muh-RY’-us) Pass.

The 232-pound adult female had been captured in 2000 as part of a Glacier National Park research project. The yearlings weighed about 65 pounds.

Fish, Wildlife and Parks officials say there were no attractants that would have drawn the bears to the tracks. State and federal wildlife agencies have worked with railroad companies to minimize grizzly bear deaths along travel routes, including removing spilled grain and reducing vegetation.
