Travel Delays, Heavy Snow Possible This Weekend in Billings

Traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday is going to be challenging with several weather systems likely to cause delays from coast to coast.

If you're flying into Denver or Minneapolis, delays are possible with rain and snow expected for the Central and Eastern part of the U.S. through Wednesday (11/27), according to the National Weather Service.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Denver until 5pm MDT on Tuesday (11/26). Minneapolis-St. Paul will have a Winter Storm Warning in effect from 5pm on Tuesday through Noon on Wednesday.

A second weather system with a "siege of rain and snow" is expected to start Tuesday for the Western states, according to the N.W.S. That weather system could bring snow into Southeast Montana for Thanksgiving and the upcoming weekend.

As of Monday (11/25), the forecast for Billings has a 20 percent chance of snowfall beginning Wednesday night. Snowfall chances ramp up to 60 percent on Thanksgiving Day, and 50 percent on both Friday and Saturday according to the N.W.S.

Accumulation amounts are still unclear for Billings with the National Weather Service predicting less than a half an inch Wednesday night and around an inch Thanksgiving Day. The Weather Channel is forecasting less than an inch of snow accumulation for Billings on Thanksgiving Thursday, 1-3 inches on Friday, and about an inch on Saturday.

KTVQ's Bob McGuire reports early computer models show 10 to 14 inches of snow accumulating in Billings by next Sunday night (12/1), but are "subject to change."

Portions of Central and North Central Montana, including Great Falls and Havre, will be under a Winter Storm Watch from Tuesday night (11/26) through Thursday.(11/28) at 5pm. This storm could dump up to 18 inches of snow along the east slopes of the Rocky Mountain Front by Thanksgiving evening.
