Shocking Untimely Death of a Montana Grizzly Basketball Legend

There may never be another single-game performance in school history to rival the one put on by this incredible player back in 2010.

It is one of many memories of him that University of Montana Grizzly basketball fans will reflect upon, following news of the tragic death of legendary Griz basketball star Anthony Johnson, who died last night (Wednesday) in Tacoma, Washington. His wife of 18 years, Shaunte Nance Johnson, who played basketball for the Montana Lady Griz, was by his side.

Anthony was only 37 years old. He leaves behind Shaunte and their three children. A fourth child is on the way.

Anthony had been in critical condition since suffering a massive stroke during his daughter's birthday party on October 21. On her Facebook page last night, Shaunte posted, "He's gone. We "celebrated" our last anniversary, and his last breath, cuddled in his bed, blasting our favorite love songs.

"I am one of the luckiest women to have experienced love at this level for so long."

In the 2010 Big Sky Conference Basketball Finals in Ogden, Utah, behind by over 20 points early in the second half, Anthony had one of the most memorable performances in Grizzly basketball history. He went on an unstoppable scoring spree, scoring 34 of his 42 points in the second half, including the Grizzlies' final 21 points in the game, to lead his team past Damian Lillard's Weber State Wildcats, 66-65.

While that signature single-game performance was far from everything Anthony brought to the Griz, it was worthy of a nomination that year for the annual ESPN "Espy" Awards.
