Montana Senators Back Bill to Reverse Hobby Lobby Decision
Montana’s U.S. Senators are teaming up with Washington Senator Patty Murray and a bevy of other democrats to support a new bill designed to overturn the U.S. Supreme Court’s Hobby Lobby decision. That decision, affirmed that closely-held corporations could not be fined for refusing to pay for insurance coverage of certain types of birth control to which the owners of the corporation had a religious objection.
Patty Murray introduced the bill (see video above), but Montana's senators also spoke out about the Protect Women's Health from Corporate Interference Act.
Montana Junior Senator John Walsh said, "No boss should have a say in the healthcare employees receive, every woman and family should have the right to make their own healthcare decisions, free from interference of their place of employment. This decision sets a dangerous precedent that puts freedom at risk."
Montana Senior Senator Jon Tester said, "Thanks to the supreme court, a nameless, faceless corporation can stand between a woman and her basic health care needs. A woman's health care decisions should be made in private in consultation with her doctor. This bill tells the supreme court that the American people stand with women and the individual freedoms every citizen should enjoy."
A similar bill is expected to come to the U.S. House soon.
