Meet me at the Mint.

Pick a direction anywhere in Big Sky Country and you will probably be near a bar called the Mint. Scattered in mostly smaller towns across the state, you'll find thirteen Mint bars in Montana and just about as many named Stockman.

From Plains to Ophiem and Sunburst to Livingston, Montana Mint bars are usually old. Perhaps the name has been popular since the mining days, with the "Mint" connotation of good luck and striking it rich. The Big Sky Journal noted that cattlemen hung out at the Stockman bar, while railroaders and miners were Mint regulars.

You'll meet the nicest people at the Mint.

Nowadays, we're confident that cowboys and miners (and everyone else) can mingle freely in whatever bar they'd like. Every Mint bar I've ever been to has always been awesome and any bar owner in small-town Montana will happily take money from well-paying, respectful customers. How many Mints on our list have you visited?

The Mint - Belgrade, MT.

Belgrade's Mint seems to have changed a little bit since I ran around the Gallatin Valley. Of course, it's not the only thing that's changed in the Bozeman area in the last 25 years.

The Google map car doesn't make it through downtown Big Sandy very often. Like, once. In 2008.

The Mint - Chinook, MT

The Google Car has never passed by the Mint in Chinook. We imagine it looks quite similar to the other Mints on this list.

We're big fans of this central Montana town and the Lewistown Mint looks like our kind of place.

Downtown Livingston is so much fun, with grand brick buildings lining the streets in a four or five-block radius full of shops, restaurants, and classic bars like the Mint.

The Mint - Libby, MT

This Mint looks dark and quiet, with an interesting mix of colorful locals. Perfect. We imagine it was one of those really smokey bars before indoor smoking was banned.

Sorry for another lousy photo. The Google Map car made it to this intersection and decided that was good enough. Like many of the Mints on this list, the one in Malta also serves food.

Just west of Harlowton is the rural community of Martinsdale. The Charles M Bair Museum is just down the road. After a tour, stop by for a coldie at the Mint.

Why do they have a fake palm tree on the roof of a bar in northwestern Montana? Why not. Stop by the Mint next time you're in Plains to find out.

The Mint - Sunburst, MT

We're 100% certain there is an interesting story behind the Mint in the tiny town of Sunburst. Considering it used to be a church and all. Remind us to do a follow-up on this quirky Mint.

Did we miss any Mints in Montana?

Let us know with a comment on Facebook, Message Us on the App, or shoot me an email. Michael.Foth@TownsquareMedia.com This info was accurate according to Google as of 11/6/23. Please call or do more research before you head off to some far-flung town to visit a Mint and find out that it recently closed.

Someday it would be fun to take a three or four-day weekend and visit every single Mint Bar in Montana, seeing the sights along the way. Maybe someone should organize a Montana Mint Bar tour or something. Collect a coozie or something from each one and get a commemorative teeshirt.
